Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: After Volume 4
Background: Ren's entry in the RWBY wiki
Personality: Externally, Ren seems like someone who is always in control of his emotions - for the most part he doesn't emote very strongly, carrying himself with an air of neutrality that makes him seem pretty zen. In spite of this, he's still very much a young man with all the same hurdles to tackle as anyone else entering emerging adulthood. He's awkward in emotional matters (even balking once at the question of whether he and Nora are an item), though he's recently shown signs of opening up more such as holding Nora's hand and embracing Jaune before they parted ways for a time. He's prone to being moody and standoffish when something reminds him of the tragic ruination of his home village, snapping at his friends and clouding his judgment. He's seen some closure in that regard after slaying the Nuckelavee Grimm that was responsible for most of the destruction, but that does nothing to undo what happened to his family and it will be some time until the wound truly begins to heal.
It's impossible to talk about Ren without emphasizing the importance of his relationship with Nora. Nora, to Ren, is the one good thing in his life that's been with him through all of life's challenges. Having failed to intervene on her behalf when she was an orphan living on the street being harrassed by bullies, he since went well out of his way to ensure her well-being, risking his safety at a very young age to help her escape from the Grimm that attacked his hometown (with some help from the activation of his semblance). Ren is protective of Nora, which is a bit funny since she's very much the stronger of the two, but he still finds himself frightened when she's in harm's way (such as when the sniper took aim at her during the tournament, or when she was struck by a rampaging mech suit during the fall of Beacon). While others may find Nora overbearing and loud to a fault Ren has been seen to smile at her abundant energy, even if she tires him out on a daily basis. The lingering question, at all times, is whether or not there are romantic feelings in play there - and there are, but Ren doesn't seem to be the best at recognizing it until recently, when he reaches out for Nora's hand and lets her rest her head on his shoulder. He might not be ready to take the plunge just yet, so to speak, but it's obvious that the feelings are there.
When it comes to just about anyone else, Ren is very quiet. Even after months of being together as a team, Jaune remarked that Ren has barely spoken a word to him on his own. This was probably a result of spending a lot of time growing up without much opportunity to socialize, having only Nora to consistently speak with. He seems to be growing out of his shell a bit, so to speak, talking a little more with each passing volume, and by the current point in the series he interjects into conversations between them team with more regularity. He does have a little bit of a sassy side deep down (which his mother claimed he got from her), though it tends to emerge in dry, subtle comments moreso than anything blatant.
Abilities: As a huntsman (in training) in the world of Remnant, Ren has the ability to channel his Aura, a special life force that can be used in a variety of ways. Aura acts as a reflexive shield against damage, to the extent that one can be struck with tremendous force with weapons that would normally be lethal and not suffer visible injury until their Aura is depleted past a certain threshold. Aura has also been described as offering a sort of preemptive warning against danger, allowing a huntsman who is properly attuned with it to know a threat is coming before it's there - Ren has proven to be more gifted in this regard than others, at one point sensing an incoming enemy before the man was even within the walls of the city, well before the rest of his group knew anything was wrong. Aura also speeds up the healing process, though if one's aura is depleted it takes time for it to return. Ren, in particular, has been shown to be particularly in-tune with channeling Aura, to the point that he was able to charge it through his hands and deliver an explosive blow to a monster to finish it off, a feat which only one upperclassman has been seen capable of doing.
Huntsmen and Huntresses also tend to have one very personal ability known as a semblance, which is unique to them and their Aura (though there are cases where a Semblance is hereditary). Ren's semblance is that of tranquility - when activated it suppresses extreme emotions to bring them back towards a more neutral state, allowing him or others to remain calm in the face of danger and to act accordingly. In the world of Remnant, where the monsters of Grimm sense their prey by homing in on the presence of negative emotions, Ren's semblance can effectively render himself or others invisible.
Outside of these abilities, Ren's physical training as a Huntsman has granted him above average strength and agility, and he's adept in close combat (as well as midrange, with the use of his dual submachine guns named Stormflower), though he's often seen as not being as dominant a fighter as some of the others. Even so, he's improved throughout the series, and strives to continue doing so.
Alignment: Sosyne
Emotion Sample: Anyone from the world of Remnant already knew the dangers of negative emotions, but the risks here were different. While a strong enough wave of anger or sorrow back home could bring in swarms of Grimm throughout the streets, here the results were much more immediate. Destruction could happen in real time with a heated argument, and it pained him to see it. Having lost his home some time ago he never had the chance to be part of a real community, to help it grow and flourish, and he can't help but feel a certain drive to help this world however he can.
His semblance, he found, gave him a unique chance to do exactly that - not just by promoting its growth, but by mitigating its destruction.
The scene is pretty standard - it's not a particularly extraordinary day in any sense of the word. The weather's neither hot nor cold, the air neither still nor gusting, and Ren's enjoying the peace and quiet as he often does. There's not much on his agenda today in particular other than picking up groceries, so his plan is to spend the rest of the day finding somewhere to volunteer his services. He's become a proponent of community service, especially any time children are involved. Perhaps he just wants to make sure they have things better than he did. He wonders, briefly, if the school needs any help today, but his thoughts are cut off by a shout, something angry and biting, and his attention snaps back into the moment to home in on the source. It's what should be a pretty minor altercation, a simple case of someone not watching where they were going and bumping into a stranger in passing, but for some reason tensions are running high. The shouting continues back and forth, the language turns... less than appropriate for a public setting, and in the pit of his stomach Ren feels his Aura warning him of approaching danger. These two are going to cause some legitimate damage if things aren't handled quickly.
He doesn't approach them - he doesn't have to. Without a word he stops along the side of the road, lowering himself to one knee and pressing his fingertips against the ground. A pulse of Aura runs through his body, travelling invisibly through the ground to touch the two arguing men with his semblance. The effect is subtle but quick as they both seem to take stock of the situation, anger giving way to ration before apologies are muttered and they continue on their way. Ren breathes out a sigh, feeling the danger fade away, and rises back to his feet feeling a little accomplished, a little pleased with himself. He doesn't need to call attention to what he did, and no one needs to know he intervened at all. As long as the results are good for everyone, that's good enough for him, and he continues on his way with renewed optimism.
He doesn't even notice the trail of flowers blooming in each of his footsteps.
